All About Doyle

On the south side of rural White County, Tennessee tucked away just off of U.S. Highway 70, the Nashville Highway, sits the small, bypassed town of Doyle. With an estimated population of 568 people as of 2018, the town is surrounded by sprawling southern farmland and fields on all sides with the exception of a patch of woodland and mountain to the southwest and a limestone quarry on the southern tip of the town. The ridge overlooking the community is known as Gum Spring Mountain. Doyle is roughly equidistant between the somewhat larger town of Sparta to the north and a collection of equally cozy villages to the south strung along the highway and the twisting Caney Fork.
Doyle has worn a few different faces since its inception. Named for an early settler, railways in White County counted the location as an ideal stop for their passengers as far back as the 1880’s. Consequently, people originally called the place Doyle Station before dropping the station in later years. Doyle College, one of twelve Baptists schools in Tennessee, opened in 1884 and would operate until the 1910’s, giving the area a college town feeling during those decades. The town was incorporated in 1905.
Doyle has a city hall, a fire department, and an elementary school. The elementary school is for children from preschool to the fifth grade. Middle school and high school age-children attend classes in Sparta about 7 miles away. Local residents can shop at Keith’s Market for groceries and get their hair cut at Margaret’s Hair Care Center. For a downhome and traditional southern meal, drop in at Doyle Cafe, though be warned they’re only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Places of worship include Doyle Church of Christ and just outside the town borders to the east, Nazarene Church and Greenwood Baptists Church, both on Hodges Bridge Road.
