All About Rock Island
The village of Rock Island, Tennessee sits at the tri-corner border of Warren, White, and Van Buren counties. The border is formed by the Caney Fork which splits off into the Collins and Rocky Rivers branching southwest and south respectively. The confluence of rivers forms natural borders for Rock Island, which connects to Walling just over the Caney Fork. Heading south out of town on 136 leads to US 70 (Sparta Highway) and Bone Cave and Campaign, the next nearest towns. The isthmus of land Rock Island occupies is heavily forested, excepting a few clearings for farmland along Great Falls Lake on the town’s westside.
Major attractions in the area are the Great Falls Dam and Rock Island State Park. At the park, visitors can take in the dam, the scenic Twin Falls, and the Spring Castle (or spring house). The castle belonged to the Great Falls Cotton Mill, and workers used it for storage, possibly as far back as the late 1800’s. Historic landmarks in Rock Island include the Great Falls Cotton Mill west of town and the Great Falls Hydroelectric Station, built in 1917 and shared by White County.
The Caney Fork is a well-stocked river, featuring rainbow and brown trout. Naturally, fishermen should be licensed and have a trout stamp.
Rock Island is home to a few commercial ventures, including the antique and furniture store the Lazy Daisy, the competing Rustic Touch with its antiques and clothing, and the Rock Island Market featuring a grill, dining area, and fishing supplies. Cotten’s Marina lies between 136 leading north out of town and the Rock Island Railroad Bridge. Just over the river and technically within Walling is the Foglight Foodhouse, a highly rustic eatery focused on serving up creole and Cajun dishes.
The community has a post office and two churches, the Rock Island Church of Christ and Rock Island Presbyterian Church.
