All About Smithville
Smithville, Tennessee lies in the heart of DeKalb County and serves as the county seat. The city boasts the county’s largest population, with 4,530 residents living there as of 2010. Major byways in the city include U.S Highway 70, the relatively short State Route 146, and State Route 56. The city has a water tower, a post office, a city hall, and DeKalb County Courthouse.
Tennessee Secretary of State and State Senator Samuel Granville Smith lent his name to Smithville, which was founded in 1838. Smithville was incorporated in 1843 and lost its status in 1877. It was reincorporated in 1919 and three years later was electrified.
The bulk of business is done along busy Congress Boulevard (State Route 56) and Broad Street (U.S. Highway 70). Numerous fast food outlets, grocery stores, dollar stores, banks, auto parts stores, and churches line these two streets. A pair of nurseries are found on the south side of town. The high school and the middle school is on the west side of the city; there are elementary schools downtown and on the northside.
The Smithville Fiddler’s Jamboree and Craft Festival has been held in the city since 1972, and bills itself as the official state festival for the state of Tennessee. Held over the Fourth of July, it’s a fiddling competition intended to also celebrate the nation’s independence. The original jamboree had 13 competition categories and provided $1,200 in prize money. There are 31 categories planned for 2020, with over $12,000 offered to the winners. Visitors can expect to find corn dogs, barbecue sandwiches, lemonade, craft booths, and the finest country and folk music in the region.
The northernmost extension of town includes Smithville Municipal Airport, FAA identifier 0A3. The facility was first active in 1971. There appear to be two runways and 13 aircraft based on the field, including 10 single engine airplanes, 2 multi engine planes, and a helicopter.
